The Southwestern Idaho Birders Association held its first meeting in 1997 by bird watchers who were interested in developing a program to meet the bird watching interests of people who live in the western end of the Treasure Valley. Approximately 25 bird watchers attended that first meeting; in 2010 the club has a membership roster of 114 members.

During the last ten years the Southwestern Idaho Birders Association has adopted a bluebird nestbox trail in the Owyhee Mountains and has held annual fundraisers to support local bird rehabilitators. The club publishes a monthly newsletter to keep its members informed of on-going and upcoming events. Monthly fieldtrips are scheduled to local and out-of-area destinations to watch resident and migratory birds.
